Biography

After working 8 years in critical care, trauma, burn unit, and pediatric/neonatal intensive care, 6 years in dialysis & diabetes, 11 years in university teaching & research, and more than 7 years in private practice, I know that I truly love helping both adults and children improve their nutritional intake. I have advanced training in sports nutrition, and I currently work full time with the US Naval Academy football team/NCAA teams and all 4400 Midshipmen to improve their nutritional intake and performance. I run 8 miles daily in less than an hour, and cross country ski 50 km in under 4 hours, which I attribute to high intensity training combined with an evidence-based sports nutrition diet. I have advanced training in both adult and pediatric obesity, with 10 years experience as a board certified specialist in pediatric nutrition and 5 years experience as a board certified specialist in critical care nutrition. I worked for 4 years in the level III neonatal intensive care unit and high risk obstetrics, and became certified as a breastfeeding educator and certified to perform indirect calorimetry studies on critically ill preterm infants, children, and adults. As evidence that I am a top performer with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, I was selected as the US Air Force Biomedical Sciences Officer of the Year, Squadron Officer School Top Graduate and Outstanding Briefer, Air Force Outstanding Dietetic Intern, and a national speaker at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, and their National Pediatric Symposium. Additionally I was selected twice by AND to author/develop the board certification in pediatrics exam, and to write their Evidence Analysis Library for breastfeeding, and to edit their Manual of Clinical Dietetics twice, and to pilot test the "Fellow of the AND" program. I am a National Defense Service Medal Veteran.
